Anthologies

We are seeking #ownvoices submissions for our upcoming anthology on Trans Joy, the profits of which will go towards trans organisations. This means we’re looking for the submission of short pieces by authors who fall somewhere under the trans umbrella. The collection will be published on 31 March, 2024, otherwise known as Transgender Day of Visibility.

Submission guidelines

  • Theme: Trans joy, whatever that means to you. With the world the way that it is, we want stories that celebrate being Trans. It doesn’t have to be all sunshine and rainbows, but stories must end on an optimistic note
  • Genre: This collection is about quality, not genre. All short pieces are welcome, including short stories, poetry, personal essays, flash fiction, visual artworks, and so on. Please keep in mind that the anthology is aimed at a broad audience, including teenagers, so we won’t publish works that are over PG-13.
  • Length: Submissions can be up to 7,500 words.
  • Language: The English language will feature as this collection’s main language. English translations of existing work will be accepted, and a link to the original piece can be added to the published piece if available.
  • Other considerations: At this time, submissions created with the use of generative AI, such as OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard, Microsoft Bing, Anthropic Claude, Stable Diffusion, or MidJourney, are not accepted.
  • Format: Please email your submission to transjoy96@gmail.com as .doc, .docx, or Google Doc.
  • Biographical information: The author’s name or pen name and email address should be typed at the top of the first page. Please include a brief biographical note geared towards the collection’s topic.
  • Deadline for submission: 29 October 2023.
  • Response time: Authors will hear no later than 20 December 2023 whether their submission is chosen.
  • Rights: Authors retain all rights. Since this is a non-profit project (all proceeds will go toward trans rights organisations) payment is in the form of an eBook copy of the completed anthology.
  • For all your questions, please contact us at transjoy96@gmail.com.

Who are the editors behind the project?

Ash Roberts knows the importance of representation in stories, and she credits Rick Riordan with saving her life. As a transgender woman, she writes stories with LGBTQIA+ characters so nobody else will have to grow up thinking they are broken and alone. She lives at the foot of the Colorado Rockies with her wife, two sons,  and 2 ¾ cats.

Jamie D. Sands (he/they) is a non-binary Kiwi who’s always been wondering ‘what if’? A number one bestseller on Amazon, they write optimistic urban fantasy and romance highlighting queer characters. They edited Tales from the Tavern, a fantasy charity anthology. He lives with a non-binary spouse and they have been adopted by two stray cats (plus kinda two more, it’s a long story).

Mariëlle S. Smith is a cisgender writer, editor, and writing coach. Together with Ash Roberts, she edited the Courage is a Gift and Other Stories by and about Transgender, Non-Binary, and genderqueer People anthology. She co-hosted the Doing Diversity in Writing podcast and lives in Cyprus with her three cats and has yet to u-haul with her partner.

Courage is a gift and other stories by and about transgender, non binary and genderqueer people

Representation is vital. No matter what we identify as, we need role models who resonate. In fiction, we need to read stories about people who are like us, written by people who are like us. In this second My Voice, My Story anthology, Mariëlle S. Smith, Sìne Màiri Ní Ailpín, and Ash Roberts have collected a variety of stories by and about transgender, non-binary, and genderqueer people.

From high school experiences to fantasy adventures, from sci-fi sages to transition tales, Courage is a gift has something for everyone, no matter how they identify.
