In the past weeks, I’ve been shining a light on the idea of being a “prolific” writer. Today, I will share the fourth and last question I ask when trying to figure out what my clients want from their writing – How many words do YOU want to write per day?

Figure out YOUR ideal word count

How to Effortlessly Write 1000+ Words – Per HOUR. The 2kH Formula: How To Instantly Write At Least 2,000 Words PER HOUR. 5,000 Words Per Hour: Write Faster, Write Smarter. 10,000 Words A Day: The definitive guide to writing faster, writing better, and writing every day.

These are just a few of the books published in the last two years that stress the importance of learning how to write not only better, but also faster. 10,000 words a day? NaNoWriMo just became a piece of cake!

In three weeks’ time, National Novel Writing Month will begin. Hundreds of thousands of writers across the world. 30 days. 50,000 words before the end of November.

But then what? What are you going to do with that pile of words come December? Put it in a drawer? Rewrite? Find beta readers?

Or are you going to enter a giveaway for a full developmental edit of your NaNoWriMo 2016 project? I thought so.

In honour of NaNoWriMo 2016, I am giving away a FREE developmental edit up to 50K words worth $575/£465. What is more, I have teamed up with my colleague Michelle Leedy, who will be giving away a FREE copy-edit up to 50K words. That’s two separate giveaways, two chances to win!

Is this giveaway for me?

Did you or are you going to sign up for NaNoWriMo 2016? Then, yes. Do you write in English or Dutch? Then, yes.

What can I win?

A full developmental edit up to 50K words.

A developmental edit is a content edit that helps you develop every single aspect of your story, including plot, characters, structure, pace, voice, audience, and setting. It points out larger issues and zooms in on every little detail. A full developmental edit will get you two separate documents. The first document will contain my overall assessment and advice on the story as a whole, including strengths and weaknesses. The second document will contain your work including extensive comments, suggestions, and track changes on all aspects of your story.

How do I enter the giveaway?

On being a prolific writer III – What is a realistic goal for YOU for NOW?

In the following weeks, I’ll be shining a light on the idea of being a “prolific” writer. Today, I will share the third question I ask when trying to figure out what my clients want from their writing – What is a realistic goal for YOU for NOW?

Figure out your SHORT-TERM goals as well as your LONG-TERM goals

Being clear on your personal goal is great. Knowing what you want to achieve in the long run will provide much-needed focus and enable you to steer your determination in the right direction. But what if that personal goal is a long way down the road from where you are now? How do you get to that point without constantly being frustrated that you aren’t there yet?

The third question I always ask is: What goal is realistic for YOU for NOW?

Where it’s excellent to have clear goals in mind for the future, these goals are long-term, and not short-term. Yet, most of us find ourselves frustrated being where we ARE and not where we want to BE. And when we are frustrated about our own process, we tend to start comparing ourselves to others.

K.M. Weiland's Conquering Writer’s Block and Summoning Inspiration: Learn to Nurture a Lifestyle of Creativity - Review

In Conquering Writer’s Block and Summoning Inspiration: Learn to Nurture a Lifestyle of Creativity (Helping Writers Become Authors Book 5), K.M. Weiland, bestselling author of both fiction and non-fiction books and mentor of authors, offers tips and tricks to stay inspired as an author. Interestingly, halfway through the book, Weiland admits she doesn’t actually believe writer’s block exists. And that explains a lot.

Despite the title, this is not a book for people who suffer from actual writer’s block. As a mentor of writers who have been or are struggling with it, I can’t help but believe it exists and that it wreaks some serious havoc. The same way there is a difference between feeling the blues and being depressed, there is a difference between a writing rut and writer’s block.

If it’s writer’s block you’re suffering from, Conquering Writer’s Block and Summoning Inspiration: Learn to Nurture a Lifestyle of Creativity (Helping Writers Become Authors Book 5) is far from hands-on enough to actually make you conquer it, no matter what the title promises. Read More →

On being a prolific writer II – What does “making a living” mean to YOU?

In the following weeks, I’ll be shining a light on the idea of being a “prolific” writer. Today, I will share the second question I ask when trying to figure out what my clients want from their writing – What does “making a living” mean to  you?

Figure out YOUR financial goal

There are so so many articles out there that will tell you about writers who managed to start earning a 6-figure income through their writing, and how you yourself can become as successful within the next 2 to 5 years. Earning that much money through your writing sounds absolutely fabulous, but do you really need that kind of money? Is that truly a goal you have to set for yourself? Or is it far from what you need?

We all know that there are particular standards that differ per country/culture as to what making a living amounts to. There are numbers we look up to, numbers we look down upon, and numbers we would be ok with. Often, however, the numbers we would be ok with are higher than we would need to live our lives comfortably enough (which is the basic meaning of making a living, after all).
